Van Johnson as the Postman

I was pleased to see Van Johnson essay the role of the Postman in this film. He was too often relegated to secondary roles at MGM and rarely had the opportunity to protray a well-rounded three- or four-dimensional character. But here he does so and does so extremely well. When he delivers the aforementioned letters to Lana Turner and Van Heflin respectively, notice how he knocks at their doors. He is truly brilliant. He raises his fist and raps eloquently. Every time I see him knock I cry. As for his ringing, it's the performance of a god, a Barrymore, a Weismuller.

I was wondering if anyone had an idea as to which of today's actors could portray the Postman as well as Mrs. Jonhson's boy Van. Who would have sufficient talent? Who could ring not once but twice?
