Scene similar to one in Bonnie And Clyde

Comment contains SPOILERS

There's a scene with Cora and Frank riding in the car after the ocean swim wherein Frank proved his love/devotion that is very similar to a scene in Bonnie and Clyde where those two are riding in a car just after making love and before being ambushed. In both scenes care is taken to show the lovers cozy abnd comfy, blissfully happy and care-free, perhaps for the first time, having just experienced an important relationship affirmation. Both scenes are interupted by sudden violent death.

They're so similar I gotta wonder if Beatty was paying an homage.

Aren't you gonna tell me to break a leg?
Break 'em both.

You missed the sex scene? Bummer.
Cora made him wear a condom. And then he mistakenly called out Bette Davis' name during climax. It was embarrassing.

Why they were tired was Cora swam out very far from the shore. She wanted to tire herself and get away from the mess she made of her life. Johnny swam after her, recued her and tired himself out in the process. It really made you sad for them in the next scene.

That's how I saw it.

I think she was also deliberately putting herself at Frank's mercy, to find out for sure if he loved her. She told him that he could just let her drown, that no one would know...she was testing him, and he passed the test.

I agree, Smart Cookie. Cora put Frank through a lot of tests. Too bad she left the note in the cash register, though!

Not to be snarky but how does this make her a 'smart cookie' ? What if Frank 'failed' the test ?? It 'works' of course because he does 'pass the test'. The alternate scene could have been interesting too:
"Last one to shore is a rotten egg... !!" Or maybe:
"Hope you brought your water wings Cora..." Or:
"Cora, I'd like introduce you to my friend - Davey Jones..."

glug, glug, glug...

I guess if he failed the test, she would have dropped him.
