the postman always rings twice

john garfield - the original and best, anti-hero. more dynamic than brando, mcqueen, newman, deniro & pacino all rolled into one. plus an intrinsic ability to identify with the common man, which none of those others could project.

"more dynamic than brando, mcqueen, newman, deniro & pacino all rolled into one"

!!! but Keanu Reaves is still better, right?

reply

Only someone who misspells "postman" could say that John Garfield is more dynamic than Marlon Brando.

reply

ghtx-John Garfield is 100 times the actor than Brando, far more dynamic is understating it. He far exceeds him. And I can spell postman. Now do you want to attack me?

"Yes Mr. Milton."

reply

this kind of hyperbole is unnecessary. What roles of Garfield's did you think merit such laudation? Because Brando's got some pretty dynamic stuff in the canon. I'll admit I've only seen Postman and Body and Soul by Garfield, both good and surpassing Brando in things like Guys and Dolls or the Freshman, but leaving his truly breathtaking performances (Terry Malloy, Stanley Kowalski, Vito Corleone) untouched. Is there something better representing Garfield that I should see to boost my opinion of his talents?

reply

Zygimantas-I would suggest Garfield in Pride of the Marines.
And I might add that Garfield died before his talent matured, he was only 39.
He was also blacklisted during the Communist scare of the late 1940's.

Interesting trivia from IMDB about Garfield and A Streetcar named Desire:
Garfield was producer Irene Mayer Selznick's first choice to play Stanley Kowalski in the Broadway premiere of "A Streetcar Named Desire."

Garfield turned down the role of Stanley Kowalski because he didn't want to be overshadowed by the female lead.

It's too bad he didn't take the part...

De Niro is UNBELIEVABLE! He is in my top ten. And the same for Pacino, favorite Pacino, Dog Day Afternoon. Favorite De Niro is harder. Casino comes to mind and Raging Bull. Then again who can't love Rupert Pupkin?

reply

dude that is crazy talk? i really like john garfield, but to compare him to brando is ridiculous. he was a subtle actor, with a limited range. brando was a powerhouse. unmatchable, even by today's standards.

It is interesting how as we age our opinions change- I recently watched A Street Car Named Desire, and I have to agree with you- that is an outstanding movie, with an amazing performance.
I also watched recently The Chase, he is growing on me.

Alright folks, what we are talking about here is,intensity: having some quality in high degree,(I looked it up).In this case it is strength of screen image. The guy simply smoldered with intensity of feeling(love, hate, sympathy)on the screen, and he took you right along with him in the process. Be he good or bad, and with him it was always a mixture of both, the intensity he brought to his characters was such that you couldn't take your eyes off him while he was on screen.

I loved John Garfield in this movie and sadly, this is the only film of his I've ever seen.

John Garfield was the original "rebel", "method" actor.

John Garfield is another one of my favorites and I never get tired of seeing him on-screen

Another of his great movies to recommend is "Force of Evil" from 1948 that was a great film noir too.
"Pride of the Marines" - he was excellent in that one too.
He was very good in "Air Force" though his role is not that big there and also "Sea Wolf" and "Tortilla Flat".

He also plays a good crazy, bad guy in "Out of the Fog"

AND who can forget his debut in "Four Daughters" from 1938 - he clearly stole that movie from all the other cast members!

And with all of these great movies he did...I must add that he was born to play Frank Chambers, he was just awesome in The Postman Always Rings Twice!!

He was TRULY great and I liked him alot!
Had he not died young, he could've been making movies right until the 70s or 80s.

One thing I didn't like about Brando much is that he had a tendency to over-act.

Brando was good and very popular BUT to say that he is the best or is above all of these other great actors is just NOT true.

**There are just TOO MANY great actors, great performances, and great movies throughout Hollywood history to focus just on Brando.

Vastly overrated flick; Lana Turner was her usual average self. A pretty picture, but no great actress.

Nothing exists more beautifully than nothing.
