Saw for the first time...

...last night, recorded off the TV in October.

I was deeply impressed; the crime and suspense bits were genuinely creepy, and Sim's drollery in the second half worked well.

This was advertised as a comedy thriller, and was unusual in actually fitting the description.

The ending was quite modern in feel, in that although the crime was solved, the detective admitted that he'd blundered in allowing the murderer to escape justice.

A complaint I have about GfD is that there's not enough foreshadowing. One of the "rules" of murder mysteries is that along the way, enough clues are provided so that after the denouement, one should say, "Yes, of course, I should have known the murderer was ..X..!"
But I didn't really get that in GfD

Excellent mystery! Alastair Sim is probably one of the most underrated actors ever.

Glad you liked it!
