Watch the DVD in French - It's fantastic!
My dad is from France and told me that he saw "Gilda" in France when he was a kid - sometime after 1946 and before 1953 when he came to the U.S. I've always read the Europeans - esp. the Italians and French - were hugely influenced by post-war American films, including "Gilda". So when I bought the DVD, my father and I watched it on the French dub feature with English subtitles. I was very curious to see if the Gilda Effect translated into French. My GOD! It's fantastic!!! The dubbing job is so good, you forget it's dubbed. Sometimes the words are changed in their meanings to fit the movement of the actors mouths - but that's about the only flaw. The French audiences were so very lucky to have such an excellent version of "Gilda" in their own language. I've come to the conclusion this is one reason why "Gilda" is so loved in France - it's almost as if "Gilda" is a French film.
The version of "Amado Mio" that she sings in French was a huge hit all over post-war Europe, too.
Please watch it in French and share your comments here. I'd be curious to know what you think.
