people think there is homosexual subtext in the film. but i dont think that is what the movie was trying to show. i just wish we could know the back story of Gilda and Johnny and why they hate each other so much. But I guess that creates part of the tension and what makes it a good movie.
We know that Gilda and Johnny use to be married once. We know this from when Gilda says, "You'd never think a woman would marry 2 crazy men in one lifetime." She means Ballin, of course. The second man, must be Johnny.
Johnny probably left Gilda. And the first time they see eachother after some time apart is when Johnny is introduced to Gilda by Ballin - in the famous hair toss scene.
when Gilda says 'You'd never think a woman would marry 2 crazy men in one lifetime.' she had already married him in the film (we saw them marry) not from any previous marriage.
All I gathered was that they had been in previous relationship together and broke up probably because of misunderstandings and lack of communication like we see in the film on both sides.

You put it right. Johnny has always been very jealous, he never trusted Gilda since she looked so drop dead gorgeous attracting every man around.
