No remake

This is one of those few films I am glad they never tried to remake.
And I hope they keep on not remaking it.

At the same time a little puzzled why they didn't? - enduring classic with a strong story; love/hate/passion/death; political overtones that were before its time.

I'm also very glad there hasn't been a remake, yet. And I dearly hope they'll never try one.

I guess they didn't because the film is so very much about Miss Hayworth and her star quality and there simply isn't a comparable actress in Hollywood today.

reply

That could be a reason but did the quality aspect ever keep Hollywood from recycling old material when there was a buck to be made?
They could never have someone else doing Put the blame on Mame without looking pitiful. And they would be wise to change the story so it isn't focused so much on the female lead.
But the story could still be re-used and updated. Has this happened, and if not - why not?

reply

Ooh I can see it now!
just add...
Some airy sex symbol like Megan Fox as Gilda
Steamy Sex scenes taking away the romance and replacing it with nudity
Some bloody way to incorporate the 'death' element
and you come out with an insanely ruined piece of *beep*

Toto, I don't think we're in Georgia anymore

A remake is futile since no one, and i mean NO ONE can replace the beautifully, perfect Rita no matter how naked they get!!

Let alone duplicating the chemestry between Rita and Glenn.

They could never duplicate the famous scene with the hair. That scene has been used in other movies eg: Shawshank Redemption. Rita is wonderful and so beautiful in this movie. Why remake the movie?

reply

I disagree that this movie cannot be remade properly. First of all we can find a more accomplished actress (actor in a female gender?) than Rita, as much as I hate to diminish anything about her. Second, direction can be matched with several top notch people. Third, it can be updated without having to put in all the T&A some think would happen (although the suit's might insist). Just make up one's mind to do it this way. Fourth, all the silly plot holes and unrealistic circumstance can be cleaned up, given one has time to do it right.

BUT ... that iconic hair flip has to either be done somewhat differently to differentiate itself OR they have to nail it perfectly. Stick the landing or forget the whole thing.

In some ways the film has been redone with nudity, etc. I'm thinking of the 1981 "Body Heat" with Kathleen Turner. That is as steamy as can be with a murder plot, misdirection, plot twists, evil husband, manipulative leading lady, etc. In 1981 Kathleen Turner was ... WOW ... but now, 31 years later? Whaddayagonnado?

Hollywood has plenty of women to choose from for beauty and form. Just get one that can deliver lines. Either get a Natalie Portman type or an unknown to make into a star, with this as a vehicle.

A remake of Gilda today would be a totally different movie. I cannot see it remade without being butchered to today's standards.

reply

It's good that no one tried to remake it, but this screenplay has a big potential for an adaptation or something based on it with a twist.
