Gilda and Johnny's prior relationship?

Who left whom?

I was kind of confused about Gilda's intentions. At times i felt like she was avenging spurned love, and at other times I thought she was making some kind of feminist/anti-monogomous relationship. And then we're told "Gilda didn't do any of those things she led you to believe." (ie with the guys). I would have liked to believe she did. She seemed like a more thoughtful femme fatale than in a lot of noirs. I'd hate to think it was all mere caprice.

Hmmmm - interesting thoughts. I always felt it was Gilda who dumped Johnny. My main clue is the toast they make at the night club. "Let's say we hate her" And then Johnny replies, "I'll drink to that."
That's what makes a great film - when people can have 2 completely different viewpoints, with facts to support them. Brilliant!

I was a little confused too. I think that was the intention. In the end I get the impression that he left her because she jilted him but only for the fun. Her heart was still with him. He was hurt and left.

The chance re-encounter complicated things. He was trying to make her remain faithful to her husband; something important to him but apparently not to her.

In the end he ended up forgiving her. Their relationship will remain tense.

For the record, a very saucy film of a very saucy woman.

8/10 excellent.

I think he left her. They had an intense love affair going on in the past but then she started flirting. To Gilda it was all innocent fun, but Johnny, who I think never knew his father, (abandonement issues) dropped her without warning. They may have still loved each other but were hurt by what the other had done. When they meet up later, they try to exact revenge by torturing each other. Ballin complicated the dynamic. Ballin was like a father figure to Johnny and he would do anything for the older man. Gilda used the men's relationship to exact more pain from Johnny. After Ballin *dies* it was Johnny's turn to torture Gilda by staying true to his boss.

Late in the movie Johnny and Gilda discuss their past relationship and one of them (Gilda, I believe) says that Johnny left her.
