I say this film should most DEF be remade for this generation. I think:

DIRECTOR: Scorsese
LEWT: Daniel Day-Lewis
JESSE: Leonardo DiCaprio
PEARL: ??? An Unknown or maybe Rosario Dawson

Of Course the ages of the characters might differ slightly but who cares? That's what dramatic license is all about!

Any ideas on a "New" Cast?

Well if it's to be as much of a success as it was in 1946, it would have to star Madonna and be directed by her ex. It was a complete flop at the time.
