why did the sailor and Hayward embark on that murder hunt in the first place - couldn't they have just gone their merry ways and that would have been it?
They could have but the young sailor thought he might have had something to do with the woman's death. He knew he was there with her. He sees his handwriting on the pad so he knows he was there between ten and eleven yet he couldn't account for that time. He couldn't know for sure unless the real killer is found.
June feels sorry for him. She knows he's easy pickings; he'll get blamed and since he doesn't remember he'll pay for something he didn't do. He's a good kid who needed a break so she stayed to help him clear his name, for his own sake, in time for him to catch his train as scheduled.
