I was curious as to Robert Osborne's reference to Lucille Ball's character, in that this role probably mirrored her real personality more than any other role. I am aware that Robert had known Lucille, but always suspected, that with the success and pressure of her television show and Studio, that a more strong willed (perhaps shrewd) business woman emerged. I Love Lucy, don't get me wrong, and enjoyed this Film Noir Lucy as well.

Lucile Ball started her career as a glamour girl/pin-up. Only after aging out of that kind of role did she transition to a loveable goof-ball. She's been lucky to have 3 distinct entertainment careers. I think she played a lot of TV movie dramas after the comedy segment of her career.

Lucille Ball appeared in nearly 70 films (!) between 1933 and 1946.
That is a staggering number; during the first phase of her career she was an extremely talented and underrated performer, performing in many genre films and B movies. She did tons of work for RKO; she met Orson Welles as she picked up additional work doing radio in the late 30's/early 40's. She remained a good friend of Mr. Welles for the rest of his life (he would one day appear on her show).
I guess what I'm saying is she had the equivalent of an entire artistic career in the movies before I Love Lucy ever existed. And her film work is consistently strong, as exemplified here in The Dark Corner.

shareLucy was gorgeous in The Dark Corner. I always wanted to see more drama and less comedy from her and this is a fine example. Lucy did some Noir radio work as well and those performances are worth searching out for those who are interested.
