Great Western......Great Tourneur

This seems to me like a color equivalent/companion to the
great Tourneur B&W visual masterpieces I Walked
With a Zombie and Out of the Past. The good thing is that
the narrative is good too....there's interesting conflict
and pathos. But the visuals are stunning. Lush, pastoral,
pine green forests and mountain vistas explode onto the screen.
I hope more Tourneur is released on DVD. And more Nicholas
Ray, too!

It was so green because it was filmed in my home state of Oregon. Specifically, in and around Diamond Lake State Park (the two mountains frequently in the background are Mt. Thielston [the pointy one], and Mt. Bailey.)
Also some scenes were filmed at Crater Lake Nat'l. Park.

Thanks for the location info I wasn't sure what mountains I was seeing in this picture, thought maybe Mt Jefferson or one of the Three Sisters maybe. I did think a scene or two was filmed at Crater Lake.

I can't agree with the OP that this was a great western but the visuals were very nice and the Indian attacks and fistfights between the settlers were visceral and realistic. Dana Andrews did a good job too.
