Intriguing, visceral, sensual, cool as heck, mysterious... this one essentially has it all to me. The cast is perfect (all on their A game) and the execution is top-notch. And really dig the atmosphere of the film which is just quintessential film noir for my money. As for overall favorite Bogey film, In a Lonely Place keeps getting better and better every time I watch it but I still say The Big Sleep is at the top.

shareIt really is a terrific film, though many times hard to follow I had to rewind more than a few times and watch a scene over again, the dialogue is very fast even the closed captioning was on the screen for only about a second, could barely keep up. The number of characters we are introduced to is unusual for any film. We are given so many names and events and places and possibilities. I wish Bogart had played Marlowe in The Lady in the Lake, even though most of it would have been just his voice it would have made that film even better. Bacall and Bogart are great together, she brings just the right amount of sultry to the role. I had seen her in a few other films much later in her career, but this is the first I've seen of her at her youthful best. I've never read Hammett but this film makes me want to read the novel. 10/10
