Book?
Can someone who has read the book, tell me how different it is compared to the movie? I know it ends when Mary is quite old, does she still end up with Paul?
shareThe book by Marcia Davenport was wonderful. I read it over 30 years ago and now think it's worth a re-read. Wonderful descriptions of Pittsburgh (I've never been there but now feel that I have), the powerful Monongahela, the Scott house on the hill. Memory is hazy but on this point I'm clear. Mary did not end up with Paul. In the end of the book, she is very old and now lives alone in the once magnificent Scott house in a now deteriorating neighborhood, having inherited it from Paul's mother. She has outlived all of the Scotts.
I was oh so grateful for the Hollywood happy ending.
