Can anyone tell me if Herschel Knutson is in the book like he was in the movie?
shareIf I remember rightly, Hersch is the boy who asks Francie out on her first date? Correct me if I'm wrong. If that's what you mean, he only appears briefly at the end of the film after Francie's graduation.
shareHe may have been the boy who asked her out after her graduation, but there were two boys in her life: Ben and Lee. Ben was at college with her and she had a crush on him, and Lee was a soldier going off to WW1 and she went out with him one night. He tried (feebly) to seduce her, and convinced her that he loved her and she loved him. He went home to PA and married his high school sweetheart, and while Francie was heartbroken, she was stronger for it. At the end, Francie and Ben are close, not in love, but getting there.
