Since this family was so poor and put money every week into insurance how come when the father died they never collected anything. Faulty logic of screenplay or something edited out?
There was the line in the movie about the sick girl who had pretty clothes, but when she died, she was buried in Potter's field, because they had no money for a burial plot.
It demonstrates where the family places their priorities.
The film doesn't mention just how chintzy that insurance policy was. In the book, the Nolans find out that the policy covered only the cost of the funeral, not the cemetery plot. Katie pays for the plot with the money from the tin can that she had nailed to the closet floor; she was saving that money for a plot of land. She makes a bitter comment about it to Francie--"well, we own a piece of land, now." The insurance guy was always a bit shifty, and he had few scruples about ripping off the poor.
Nah man, the insurance guy is ok...he even helps Katie when she decides she can no longer afford the polices for herself and the kids by telling her she can cash in the policies of the kids and using that money to pay for her own policy. He says that he isn't supposed to tell her about that option because the insurance company would keep that money and that the only reason he did tell her was because he was a dear friend of her family.
The guy who was a scheming kind of jerk was the funeral director. He's the one who gave the price for the funeral only after he saw how much the policy was worth. But it could be argued that even he was innocent because he assumed there was a plot...but then again, why didnt he ask about it right then instead of coming back later to collect it, after he had cashed in the policy...so yeah, funeral director kind of a scumbag, insurance guy is cool
Yes the insurance guy is ok he helps the family out -taking messages back and fourth for Katie and the Nolan's and her family and even helps the reunite Sissy and with the Nolan family and he does tell Katie she can get money from cashing in the children's policies. It is the funeral director who is such a jerk.
