It's just different some things are left out of the book due to the censordhip of the time. It's a good adaptaion for the most part but you don't get the full picture of their life and struggles that the book dose so well.

The movie's good but the book is much better - I've read it about a hundred times and I never get tired of it. The movie leaves out a lot of the book's plot and I don't think it really captures Francie's spirit and fire.

Now that summer's coming, put this book on your summer reading list. You won't
regret it! As good as the film is, it couldn't possibly convey all of the
richness of the novel, and Francie is one of the most memorable characters in
American fiction. The book also overflows with fascinating subplots about many
of the other characters. Okay, so maybe I'm prejudiced because it's my all-time
favorite book. I first read it when I was eleven, the same age as Francie at
the beginning of the book, and I re-read it every few years; it's just as good
every time. Since it's very episodic, you can open up the book at any point and
read any chapter as a short story, too.
If you liked the movie, you'll LOVE the book!!!!

I am a staunch believer in the book being better than the movie. However, in this case I thoroughly preferred the movie. I read the book first and didn't really enjoy it. The book includes a much longer span of time and the movie was so enjoyable...

if you do want a good Betty Smith read, I loved Joy in the Morning which probably wouldn't have been a very good movie. Read that and watch this.

It was a movie, and you're right--it wasn't very good. It starred Richard Chamberlain and Yvette Mimieux.

It is my favorite book of all time too. I have never seen the movie but it starts in 10 minutes on TMC!
