Neeley a little chubby for living in poverty

Anyone else think Neeley, as well as Johnny, seemed a little too heavy considering they were supposed to be living in poverty and wouldn't have been eating very much at all? I know Neeley was "always hungry", but what would a family like that have available to eat so much of that he would be a little overweight like that? Bread and more bread? The sister was rail thin, which better matched their lifestyle. Seems the boy should have been skinny too to be more accurate.

I would guess that Kazan figured Neeley's acting was superior to his physique, although like you say, he doesn't look underfed.

Actually with the exception of Francie and Katie they all looked better fed then they would have been.

Bread and Potatoes are fating and was mainstay because of low cost of both.

Did you see the huge girl who owned the roller skates?!!
