shareI hadn't seen it for many years. I watched it this morning and was moved and loved it.
When I saw it years ago, I was very young and I was a big fan of the book. I was disappointed at the time because the book and the movie were very different. Of course they were! But you couldn't tell it to me because I was young and I knew everything.
So now I haven't read the book for many years and watching this excellent movie is going to drive me back to reading it again. Recommend both.
It is unreasonable, in a way, to expect that a film of approximately two hours can capture the sprawling scope of a long novel. "A Tree Grows in Brooklyn", "Gone with the Wind", "From Here to Eternity", "The Grapes of Wrath" to name a few, were excellent novels and excellent films and yet distincly different in their approach. We need to take each in its own genre and be able to appreciate the different story-telling techniques each medium uses. Only so much detail can be compressed into the time frame. Even at 3 1/2 hours GWTW left out a tremendous amount of the book's detail. You kind of need to approach each as if the other did not exist.
shareYes, it is. Still a powerful film after all these years, thanks to its excellence in basically every department. My only issue with it is that things get rushed in the last half an hour and the McShane character is left underdeveloped. If it were up to Kazan to decide, he would have probably shot a 3 hour movie, which sounds about right, considering the story and pacing.
