DVD in 'The Elia Kazan Collection' 11/9/10; but...

A Tree Grows in Brooklyn is finally making its home video debut as one of 15 DVDs in The Elia Kazan Collection, available Nov. 9, 2010; SRP $199.95. But...

Only five of the films are new to DVD, and will not be available individually, while 10 are retreads of films already released, and still available as singles.

Still, the chance to own this superb film, along with the four other new releases -- Viva Zapata!, Man on a Tightrope, Wild River and America, America -- plus Martin Scorsese's documentary, A Letter to Elia, may make this set worth while...especially if you don't already own all the previously released titles in it. This collection is an unprecedented collaboration between Fox, Warner and Columbia, who each contributed films to make the set possible.

The ten recycled titles are: Boomerang!, Gentleman's Agreement, Pinky, Panic in the Streets, A Streetcar Named Desire, On the Waterfront, East of Eden, Baby Doll, A Face in the Crowd and Splendor in the Grass.

We were fortunate enough, a few years ago, to TIVO "A Tree Grows in Brooklyn" from TCM. We borrowed a stand alone DVD burner and made our own copy. My VHS tape was pretty much worn out.

From TCM? Sure it wasn't FMC (Fox Movie Channel)? Anyway, it's rumored these five hitherto unreleased films might eventually be released individually.

I'm almost positive it was TCM. They run their movies with no commercials as well, and usually have a lead in where they talk about the movie.

You're probably right. I was just curious -- TCM rarely shows 20th Century Fox films, but in thinking about it I believe they did indeed once run ATGIB. It turns up on FMC every so often as well. But with the disc coming out that'll be moot. Thanks.

My DVD comes from the Laser Disc release which was on two discs using three sides. Too bad Fox hasn't released it as a single on DVD as I understand it has some nice Extras with a commentary track by Ted Donaldson.

One of the best kept secrets is that A TREE GROWS IN BROOKLYN is available on Blu-ray. It's in a set titled: ELIA KAZAN AT FOX. You won't find it on Amazon as it is being offered exclusively by FOX CONNECT for $44.98 (including shipping). It comes with VIVA ZAPATA!, WILD RIVER and MAN ON A TIGHTROPE. At that price you are getting each Blu ray title for $11.25!
ELIA KAZAN AT FOX Vol. 1 has GENTLEMAN'S AGREEMENT, PANIC IN THE STREET, PINKY and BOOMRANG!
Though I just found out about these as of March 13, 2013 then have been available since late 2012. So if this is of interest to you just type in Fox Connect.com and look up the title as ELIA KAZAN AT FOX, Volume 2 (or 1 if that's your interest). I have a set currently on the way.
