It's called "Joy in the Morning" and it takes place about 4 years later. I'm not sure if the main character is Francie or Annie Laurie - probably a combination of both girls. She has Francie's love of storytelling, but her name is Annie McGairy, which is pretty close to Annie McShane.
Great book, too, but it doesn't rip your heart out the way A T G I B did.
"Joy" was good, but you are right....not as good as ATGIB. A movie of JITM was made in 1965 with Richard Chamerlain.

Yes I've read it, it's a good book. I've read all of Betty Smith's books, A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, Tomorrow Will Be Better, Maggie Now and Joy in the Morning.
