Original ending

What was the original ending as presented in the play?

reply

I read Uncle Harry was stabbed with a poisoned bowel movement. Sounds screwy.

Nothing is more beautiful than nothing.

reply

I think the original ending is Harry lives in despair and guilt.

The Hays Office didn't like the original ending and the replacement had to be pushed in. Oddly enough, Scarlet Street ends in almost the same way, with the murderer left alive in misery, but there don't seem to have been any objections there. Perhaps the fact that Scarlet Street was a remake of a French film by Renoir gave it some leeway.

reply

Scarlet Street was quite infamously banned.

...but it was made. The Hays Office was supposed to stop films like that being made at all. It was also a commercial success, despite - or because of - the bans, which makes the alterations to Uncle Harry even more absurd and contemptible.

That would be the logical and most noirish ending and without his former fiancé showing up. I watched the Blu-ray last night for the first time, enjoyed the film until the ending which was nonsensical.
