When that revolver slowly turned around in Murchison's hands and the barrel faced the camera, I knew what was coming. But when the gun actually went off, it still caused me to jump.
Did anyone else experience this?
It was expected; but oddly enough, it still came as a shock. I don't know if it was the loud bang after the preceding quiet, or the menacing visual of the gun pointed right at me (or both), but it startled me nevertheless.

shareYeah, they created a giant prop so that both the extreme close-up of the gun and the background action of Constance walking are in focus. But the effect didn't work nearly as well as the shot of Bergman and the poisoned coffee (supposedly in the foreground) in "Notorious," where they kept her and the coffee in focus by using a huge prop cup and placing it near her head.

shareAbout the red splash - on the DVD featurette they mentioned that someone had to cut in the red technicolor frames into every print. It must have been great to have that job in Hollywood.

Maybe I blinked but only after the famous two red frames. That was an interesting touch. Made me rewind and watch other parts to see if there were any other colour scenes; like in Dali's dream scenes.
Perhaps I was still on edge (no pun intended) after the razor scene. That and the suspense of her not being put off by the apparent killer throughout the film but finally confronting and cornering the actual killer. Good ending to a great story. Good acting too particularly by Ingrid Bergman where in some scenes she was able to demonstrate her superb skills.

I don't think I jumped the first time I watched it, but I found the sequence totally surreal, almost moreso than the dream!

Absolutely, two moments made me jump up. The gunshot for sure, I didn't expect it to be so powerful, but also when JB is remembering that he kills his brother... when his brother falls off the roof, I immediately thought to myself, "Good Lord, look at that wrought iron fencing he'd probably be impaled on if it were a later film—" and then he gets impaled and I was like HOLY *beep* *beep* lol no joke.
Yeah, I didn't think that they would show something like that in a film from the 40s, so I was a little surprised.
