The Obvious Question About This Movie and Similar Others:

why do movies about the colonial period of Latin America concentrate only on pirates and piracy? Besides THE MISSION, aren't there any movies about how the groundwork for Latin America was laid down by the viceroyalties of New Spain, New Granada, Peru, Rio de la Plata and Brasil?

While there certainly aren't enough films about Latin America at this very interesting period, there are some movies dealing with that place and era besides The Mission.

The Bridge of San Luis Rey has been filmed several times, most recently in 2004.

Aguirre, the Wrath of God (1972), is a fictionalized account of that titular conquistador's 1560 expedition.

The Liberator is set later than the period you mean, but is a biopic of early nineteenth-century independence fighter Simon Bolivar.

So there are some out there. I imagine more are probably produced in the Spanish Speaking World.
