Original Ending

I just watched this on TCM and the commentator said that the film was supposed to have a spectacular, action-packed finale with a slave rebellion and Cartagena burning to the ground, but that the ending was scrapped due to lack of budget. Paul Henreid was outraged, but refused to front 200,000 of his own money to make it happen. I love this film, but think it's too bad the original vision had to be compromised. I wish at least that the screenwriters who contrived cheapo ending had conceived a death of the villain with more violence and ironic justice than what he got. I did like ending though, and it was a great movie in general. I just wish we could see it the way it was planned.

I reckon it must have been a very early draft and sounds like a completely different story with slave rebellions and the like. RKO were never known for over budgeted films around this time. This was its first technicolour film for 10 years. I actually thought the ending with the cannon salute and skyrockets was pretty cool, not to forget the captain carrying Francisca down to his boudoir for their delayed honeymoon. Really who needs Cartagena burning down?🐭
