His Rhapsody in Blue was a work of art, but everything else Gershwin wrote, was shallow. His piano concerto is dull, Porgy and Bess is a nightmare, and the only decent song he ever wrote was Swanee. I mean, Embraceble You? the song that contains the lyrics 'come to mama come to papa do'?!! Come on!
shareI'm surprised there haven't been a ton of resonses to your gratuitously opinionated (not to mention shallow) post. Gershwin wrote lots of Tin Pan Alley tripe, to be sure, but the second concerto and the American in Paris and Cuban Overture are highly regarded in classical circles. Ironically, in my opinion, Suwanee is one of his least admirable efforts.

Jeff, you're right on the money with your assessment of the first poster. And I was about to post the same thing about "Swanee". Had it not been for that part, I would have only suspected (and not been SURE) that he/she simply had no taste.

I guess not! It's beyond impressive that George Gershwin has 474 credits (and counting) for films and TV shows which have used his and Ira's music.
Yes, I've always found Someone to Watch Over Me, Summertime, Embraceable You, An American in Paris, etc., to be mediocre and shallow (sarcasm font needed here). Thank God he was available to point this out to us.
