I just saw it last night, and rather enjoyed it. It does get a bit convoluted in the middle, and drags in places, but makes up for it with the ending. I gave it an 8/10
shareI just watched it today and I wouldn't say it was good. I would say it was great.
*I do think it is the type to be certain you are fresh and rested when you watch it, as it is definitely literate and challenging.

Abso -freaking-lutely! One of my favorite films of all time!
Wait! Wait! Where are you going? I was gonna make Espresso!
Everything! The black and white, the actors, the music, the story and narration, the beauty of Hatfield, Reed, Lansbury and Lawford. Perfect movie.
shareI just watched it again this morning. It's been awhile. Still as good as I remembered. Angela Lansbury is so charming as Sybil. My heart broke for her when Dorian suggested that she stay the night. She bent her head and then she slowly looked up at him and you could see the hurt. A great actress!
shareYes! It's a very revealing characterization of a man who shows very little emotion, but is evil. Excellent acting by all, with a surprise ending.
shareYes. It's very well done, and for a Hollywood movie of its era a fairly accurate adaptation of a famous novel. The pace is glacial at times but the (literally) pictorial virtues of the film are among its strongest points. Late Victorian London feels like an unwholesome place in this picture, and this was I imagine intentional.
A dark film, it features subtextual (in other words, gay) undertones, yet it doesn't emphasize them, probably couldn't have in 1945, and this adds to the air of unease that permeates the entire movie. This was intentional on the part of director Albert Lewin, with the guidance of MGM.
Like so many movies of its era,--late World War II and postwar--there are hints of not only sadism but of kinkiness derived from sadistic behavior. That so many Dorian Gray's characters are affluent, well groomed, articulate and attractive gives the picture a double edge. Overall, Dorian works well for what it is. If I had my way they'd have done a better job of pushing the envelope, geared the film more toward higher than average sophisticated adults rather than a broader audience.
Very good movie. I'd give it 8/10.
shareAfter a lifetime of being generally disinterested in "old movies" (basically anything before the late 1960s, and especially b&w) I watched The Picture Of Dorian Gray because my dad had talked about it a number of times over the years; he saw it in a theater when he was about 10 years old and it made an impression on him. I was always curious to see it myself, and when it was released on DVD I finally had my chance. I watched it and loved it, and after that I developed a real taste for old movies and started watching all kinds of stuff from the 50s, 40s, 30s, even 20s and beyond, once in a while.
I'd have to say if it wasn't a good movie it probably wouldn't have had that much of an impact on me.
Wow simplythebest, you posted 9 years back. I remember you from old forum.
