'Burma'

Man, their version of "Burma" sure looks like Southern California to me! I think it was the eucalyptus trees that gave it away. According to this site, my guess was right! Still an enjoyable movie, I just think it's funny that the scrub oaks, pepper trees, and hearty plants that don't need too much water could be a succesful stand-in for such a lush locale. I am not a botany geek I swear.

Yeah--it might have gone over better later had it been a British unit that did the mission, but you have to remember that Hollywood was still turning out war films to keep the population firmly behind the war effort. It was shot in California for money reasons and because there was still fighting going on in Burma at the time. Most of the gaffs in this film have long since been discussed and re-discussed--but the ones I seem to like are the obscure ones: like a supposedly dead Japanese soldier flinching at a near-by sfx explosion and tropical looking plants seeded among the California fauna to make it look, well--tropical. Still, we get to see some of our favorite character actors of the time doing their stuff--and Errol doing Errol.

Thanks, Tiredeyes, I was trying to think of a way to let folks know why they shot it the way they did! We had just been in a world War! I agree that it should have had British actors include, but as you reminded us, this was to help keep the folks behind the war effort! This is Memorial Day weekend, and I wish these films were required viewing in High School! Too bad that won't happen.

The "jungle" and lagoon are at the LA arboreteum. In fact, the house where they find LT Jacobs is still there. It was used in the TV show Fantasy Island. That area by the lagoon was where the village in the Bomba series was set up. If you ever see Teenage Caveman, Robert Vaughn and company wade through the same swamps as Errol's platoon.

I noticed this too. There's an episode of The World at War series (''It's a lovely day tomorrow'') that highlights the real C-B-I front. Most of the country is terribly wet. The grasses the soldiers were lying in and walking through during the film would have been full of insects, snakes, and assorted vermin in a real jungle. Anyways, the set doesn't detract much from the film's message. I gave it 7 stars.

Nothing wrong with a bit of Hollywood backlot. There was a war going when the film was amde!

I wonder about the view of the mountains when they reached the final hill? To me it looked like the view to the north from the ridge line above Santa Barbara.
