... but is it allowed (now or then) in NY to bring along two bottles of whisky into a bar and even show them to the bartender?

Many places that did not have a licence to sell would allow people to bring in bottles, these were known as "bottle bars" there were also "locker bars" that had locked boxes that regular customers could leave their bottle in the bar. Many bars that could sell booz allowed customers to bring in bottles.
