Was Don great? ever?

Do you think Don was a good writer? When he brags of his collegiate success, claiming that his work was hemingway-esque, do you buy it? Is there a great writer drowning himself, a has-been, or simply a never-was using the bottle as an excuse?

reply

I think Don had the potential but his expectations were probably too high, which then led to disappointments and finally to the bottle.

+ 1. He won a competition and thought he was the man and that the books would write themselves, on realizing he wasn't and they wouldn't he hit the bottle - he says so himself. The potential was there though.

I thought the Hemingway comment was sarcasm. A man commenting on his youthful arrogance.
