Why do guys do to the bar?

I drink, but I never understand why some men need to drink in a bar. I asked someone who go there and he sayed: "It's for the conversation". I understand by that that people who go to bars are gay(why whould you need conversation?).
When Don enters the bar in movie for the first time he says to bartender: "May I have your hand in marriage?"

I know several drunks who really can't stand to be alone.

Drinking alone at home is taboo. Fun, but taboo.

People drinking together in bars is an ancient tradition. It goes at least back to ancient Rome, probably further. Probably started the day after the first alcohol was discovered. Humans tend to be social creatures, not much to it beyond that.

I can help with an answer...1st hand experience...they go for attention, believe it or not! They have the captive audience of the bartender first and foremost. Then they meander over to the jukebox to be in control of the atmosphere (and its great for them to play something that everyone else will HATE so to break the mood of the crowd)...next is to impose conversation you NEVER bring up in a bar (politics, religion, and now we can include racism and sex) and thats just so they can create controversy and empty the customers out of the bar. Throw in an argument over a pool game or woman on the dancefloor and their nite is complete....you will NEVER see an alcoholic at a loud busy bar because he cant get the attention, its always at a slow bar or a slow day/nite....

Somewhat valid. I particularly found the last sentence quite astute. Never really heard it put in those terms, and of course, it is a generalization, but quite accurate in many cases.
