It's certainly one of the best;
I also have a strong fondness for 'scarlet Claw', 'Faces Death' and 'pearl of Death'

I like this film very much as well. It's sort of a Ten Little Indians in reverse. But, I'm a sucker for "Old Dark House Mysteries" anyway.

Is the "pear of death" like the apple of death in Snow White?

Ever hear about capital letters or punctuation, or are you too busy having sex with your relatives?

reply

Pearl of Death and the Pursuit to Algiers are my favs.

This one has an amazing plot, it's just that the incredible amount of buffoonery given to Watson makes this one difficult to watch. It's a Holmes, movie, not a Stooges film. Not fun watching Watson bumble his way into trouble like a child.

reply

I have to agree on the bumbling Watson. the studio must have thought they needed some comic relief and changed the Watson character to a bufoon (sp) sometimes. I prefer the Watson in the BBC Jeremy Brett shows - more in character with the Doyle stories.

reply

The Jeremy Brett series was made by Granada NOT the BBC.

House of Fear is the point were the rot starts to set in for me, the 'Old Dark House' cliches are laid on far too thick and (despite the orange pips) the plot has nothing to do with Doyle whatsoever - Sherlock Holmes Faces Death handled these elements much more convincingly; that film along with The Pearl of Death and The Scarlet Claw are the best in the series IMO, the later films (with the possible exception of Terror by Night) are especially poor.

I agree with you re Watson's bumblings, but I was appalled by the stupidity of Inspector LeStrade in this movie. I don't think I've ever seen him rush to judgement so quickly in any other Holmes movies. How this buffoon end up as an inspector at Scotland Yard proves beyond a doubt that you can sell your soul to the devil in the next life for success in this life.

Summoned up everything I thought was bad in this film. Why couldn't Watson just to shut up?

reply

It's true that in these films, Watson isn't quite the solid, resourceful companion that he is in the original stories.

But Nigel Bruce is just so comfy, cozy & endearing in his harrumphing avuncular way! For me, he's one of the many charms of this series.

reply

I reckon that Nigel Bruce's Watson manages to turn the tables on Holmes in 'Dressed To Kill.' At one point he solves the code immediately. That was after Holmes has been up all night trying to crack it. He makes Holmes look the buffoon there and then.

reply

Yes, maybe ...
It is difficult to decide, but this one is among the top 5 if not 3 for me. Maybe even at the top?
Sherlock gets pretty human in this one, and not only is Watson bungling more then usual, the good inspector close to dumbness; but also Holmes is not the usual sharp person in here. He is fumbling, rumbling and dumpling about, and on spot, while some 4 or 5 murders occur, just under his nose, and finally it is a mere coincidence that Watson stumbles on the clue that brings Holmes to a full insight. Though there had been clues before, like on the beach, or the state of the dead bodies that even me, the below-average audience, had considered strange and made me consider well before Holmes the possibility that the plot could be as it turned out to be in the end. And this is about the first one, where I had a slight chance to be there before our good hero! ;-)

Fully recommended, I adore this type of old houses immensely, and I'd be too happy to own one like that for myself. The huge and spacious rooms, the high ceilings, and the old furniture, massive, very massive. Though now I deviate from the topic in here, my excuses.

Fully recommendable!

reply

No, but it's very good, the cast is excellent and the atmosphere is rich. I like it better than most in the Forties Uni Sherlock series. They're fun just to look at as much as listen to.

reply

It's atmospheric. Although I reckon that the best three are 'The Spider Woman,' 'The Scarlet Claw' and 'The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes' in this series.
