£1,200 for a house that size, what a bargain ?

Probably not for the era. Average wages were about £165 a year in the mid 30s

£165 pounds a year?? You realize of course that's less than half-a-pound a day.

Money was worth a lot more in those days. In terms of buying power, £165 in 1937 was equivalent to around £11,000 today.
