a really haunting movie.....

....is one like The Uninvited, where your fear starts as a cold place somewhere deep inside. I like a good horror flick, but your fear there comes from outside as you cringe over what is going to jump out and get you next. I saw this movie about 50 years ago when I was a kid and it played on the Late Show in all its black-and-white glory, and I still remember the wave of cold fear that washed through me when that rose shriveled up, unnoticed, as the characters chatted nearby.

I don't think that the shrivelled roses were ever mentioned by Roderick and Pamela in the movie. So I wonder if that was done for effect only, confirming to us that the ugly room is haunted.

reply

I'm sure that was the intent. The audience knows before anyone (except the cat) set there is a malevolent spirit in that room

When I used to believe in ghosts it did scare me. Now when I think that it could have been a demon and not a ghost, that is scarier. But I see in the movie that there is something that seems to be trying to guide them into finding out what really happened there.

Demons are no more real than ghosts. Both are just figments of a superstitious imagination.

But fun in stories, like "The Uninvited". Sometimes it's good to lighten up and just be entertained.
