What happened to the father?

Sorry, but I never figured out what specifically happened to Stella's father. How did he die? I was watching this today and I'm sick with the flu. I can't figure out how Mary Meredith, Stella's father, and Carmella died. It sounds like Carmella was murdered, but how was she murdered and what happened to the others?

Spoiler alert.I don't think it ever said how the father died. After the death of the two women, he left the area and never returned. I think Stella just said that he died abroad. He seems to have written Stella, but never visited her. Mary was killed in a fall from the cliff. She was trying to throw Stella off, but then Carmella intervened. During the struggle, Mary fell to her death. Carmella then died of pneumonia. Miss Holloway claimed that she tried to save Carmella, but the evidence showed that the windows had been left open. So Carmella was technically not murdered, but the windows being left open hastened her death from pneumonia.

Thanks, operabuff67. That cleared it right up for me!

These days, Miss Holloway would almost certainly be charged with manslaughter or at least negligent homicide by some hot-shot prosecutor out to make a name for himself.
