It's a real shame this film is always forgotten when mentioning the best works of Hawks. How can anyone mention the Big Sleep without first talking about the Bogart-Bacall classic that started it all? One of the all time best films, this one has got it all, great romance, great dialogue, great story, not to mention the first and perhaps best film of the inimitably gorgeous Lauren Bacall!
I agree! It is one of her best films and it just so happens it was her first film. Out of all the Bogart-Bacall films this is my favorite because of the great chemitry, sexy dialouge, and romance.
It makes me wish Howard Hawks would of made "Dark Passage" which is unfortunately, for me at least, not on par with Big Sleep and To Have...
I've always thought the film's premise of shooting the first half from Bogart's view was not only clever but a great excuse to have just a ton of shots with Bacall in them =)
Bacall is totally gorgeous in this movie. Its no wonder that Bogey fell for her during its production. I first saw the movie a year ago or so, I was off of work due to bad weather. I found this gem and it was instantly added to my all-time top 10 list. They don't make them that way anymore. And even if they could, they would'nt have anyone like Bogey to star in it. I hope its transferred to DVD soon.
Some find her ugly? That's mind-boggling. She's astonishingly gorgeous and sexy, sultry and smart, the most beautiful wisecracking long tall glass of oh-so-cool water in film history.
To a certain extent, I agree. The Big Sleep is talked about much more than To Have and Have Not. However, I hear Twentieth Century, Only Angels Have Wings, Ball of Fire, or Monkey Business much less than To Have and Have Not and would personally put those films on par with Hawks' other great films. I agree with many that Lauren Bacall's debut is one of the best ever. I haven't seen this film in over a year. Now that I'm a huge Howard Hawks fan, I would likely appreciate this film more seeing it again.
I think this story sums up best my reaction to this movie every time I see it. I recently(late April 2005) saw an appearance of Lauren Bacall on the Larry King Live television talk show (CNN). Toward the end of the show, King playfully commented about the line "just pucker your lips and blow". Lauren shook her head and reproached him for misquoting the line. Said she, "No, no, no. That's not the line, Larry." She paused a moment, getting into character, put her head down in her famously sultry fashion, looked into his eyes and repeated (letter perfectly) the famous line. Eyes glazed over and, for a moment again the young man first hearing those words, all King could do was look wonderously at Lauren Bacall, shake his head slowly and let out a slow, appreciative "whew". Amen, brother. Amen.
Oddly enough, I've found that many people carry around the misconception that the line is from "Casablanca".
It's a very, very famous line, but relatively few people have actually seen "To Have or Have Not" -- folks know it's Bogart film, they assume it's from one of the classics everyone has seen, and so conclude it must be "Casablanca" ... LOL
