The ketchup
The ketchup that Katie and Mrs. Smith were making at the beginning of the movie was very watery. Grandpa complained that it was too thick. The soup at dinner time was thicker.

Heinz Ketchup was around in those days! Why didn't they just buy a bottle?
shareGrowing your own tomatoes was basically free, and hiring domestic servants to pick the tomatoes and can them in various forms was practically free!
Or maybe getting thick ketchup out of a narrow-necked non-squeeze bottle was so much trouble that people preferred to make their own.
Yes, my mom used to make her own ketchup back in the 70s. However, Heinz tasted so much better.

Likely because you are used to Heinz (I am). Most commercial preparations contain a lot of salt and a LOT of sugar.
I always like peanut butter, but never loved it. A PB&J is a pretty good sandwich every once in a while. About 10 years ago, my wife brought home a jar of "natural" peanut butter which is peanuts and salt, nothing else. It also retains the peanut oil (not drained off and replaced with trans fats). She hated it and so I took car of the jar. FF a decade later and my wife has to watch her sugar, so I picked up another jar of natural peanut butter.
Now we both LOVE peanut butter. To me, Skippy or Jiff tastes more like peanut butter cake frosting and neither of us can eat that anymore.
I'm sure Heinz has a lot of sugar and maybe high fructose corn syrup. I have to say, it's also my favorite and I've never had home made, but maybe after trying home made I might like that more.
I'm sure homemade ketchup has lots of salt and sugar also! We eat the organic Heinz in our home, which is delicious. I'm sure the version available back in the 70s was full of bad stuff! We also eat the Natural/Organic Jif Peanut Butter, which is a lot healthier than the regular, and is also delicious!
