when at the beginning the mother is explaining to agnes why they are eating dinner an hour early. she says that Rose is to young and she doesnt think that Rose' father will allow it.
what do you think he said when Esther told him she was engaged to John.
My great-grandmother was the vicitm of an arranged marriage at the age of 14 in 1910. This was not in a rural part of the country, but in urban southern New England. It wasn't all that uncommon in the early 20th century for young people to be married in their earlier teens, and sometmes girls as young as 12 were married off.
I know my grandmother got married at 16, don't know how "arranged" it was. This was in rural Virginia, circa 1922. She did tell me once that she thought both she and my grandfather were too young (I think he was 18) and probably contributed to their problems and break-up in the late 40's. She eventually became an avid reader because she wanted to make up for losing out on formal education.
That is true about getting married too soon, but today people wait until they are too old. Getting married when you are over 30 can lead to disaster as well because people get too set in their ways and not willing to adapt to include another person in their lives.
