Esther's the one who spoiled Tootie.

She feeds her like she's a baby instead of the 5 year old that she is, and Tootie wears Esther's nightgown as a reward for being brave. Tootie doesn't take to Rose like that, and Esther barely acknowledges the other little girl.

Maybe Esther takes to her because they're so much alike. There are two pairs of sisters, and Esther and Tootie are the younger sisters in each pair. Both are overly emotional, overly dramatic schemers, so they have more in common with each other. Rose and Agnes are the older of each pair, and seem a little more self-possessed.

I'm not crying, you fool, I'm laughing!

Hewwo.

reply

No, Esther's in the habit of spanking her, as is the father, apparently often enough that Tootie is amusingly matter-of-fact about it.

The whole family coddles the two younger girls. They were the most annoying and I could've done without their whole Halloween subplot, and the lying, and everyone just lets it go. Though Tootie's "The iceman saw a drunkard get shot yesterday and blood spurted out three feet!" is probably my favorite line of the whole movie

I felt little Tootie was a little off when she chopped off the heads of the snowmen.

Agreed. I feel like it's a product of the times there, how they underreact, nowadays it would be like "This is the fifth sign she's shown of needing therapy."

reply

Psychotherapy was in its pioneering stage back then. If a person needed counseling, maybe they talked to the local doctor or nurse. Perhaps even a teacher or minister.
