Oh, Rose. You're so stuck up.

I LOVE the way the sister says this, and while fiddling with her costume. For those days people weren't the greatest of actors, they were often very wooden and fake, but this moment is such a casual bit of authentic acting, and by a child at that, it's terrific. And so cute/funny.

Child actors are the most natural. if actors in those days weren't the greatest it's mostly because of the type of film they were doing, this one being just the type.

reply

Gee, the OP must be a Keano Reeves fan to think that "old movie" actors were "fake."
That would be news to the fans of Spencer Tracy, Barbara Stanwyck, Katharine
Hepburn, Audrey Hepburn, Mickey Rooney, Bette Davis, Van Heflin, Lizabeth
Scott, Elizabeth Taylor, Brando, Jimmy Dean, countless character actors, and
the stars of "St. Louis", including the brilliant Judy Garland.

I'm watching this right now on TCM and the acting is VERY natural and pleasing on everyone's part :)

I actually think the actors from Hollywood's Golden Age gave better performances than most of today's stars. And back then, movie stars were genuine actors, not former supermodels, singers, wrestlers or reality stars.

Agree GB...this film is a good example of this.
