Mr Smith(PLEASE help me before on the board it closes if possilbe)

Mr. Smith was a Lawyer. He had been married for 20 years and a lawyer for the same amount of time? What was his position at the Law firm in St Louis? What was the change in position when they moved? How much was he making and how big pay hike was involved?

The book says he would be the manager of the New York office. His pay would be about a third more than he made in St. Louis and if he built up business there was no telling. Considering how much higher the cost of living is in New York, I fail to see how they'd be much better off.
