Possible ''Goof?"

A friend tells me that an inconsistency occurs in the movie, where the lead detective, while searching the residence, tries to open the compartment in the bottom of the clock and failing that, kicks it in, destroying it, only to find it empty.

Later on, he opens that same compartment in front of Laura, and finds the murder weapon inside.

Am I missing something here, or is my friend full of beans?

Your friend wasn't paying attention.

The clock bashing occurred in Waldo's apartment. Finding it empty, McPherson rushes to Laura's apartment, where she has an identical clock (a gift from Waldo). There he (with Laura), discovers the mechanism which opens the door. No bashing necessary!

Laura was unaware that the clock opened. The script doesn't tip us off was WHY McPherson had a hunch about the clock.

Also, in his opening monologue, Waldo mentions of his clock, that there was only one other in existence -- and that was in Laura's apartment.

Tell your friend to watch the film again. 

(A lot of people make that mistake.)
