Husband in Original

I have not watched the 1944 version yet, but omg did I hate the husband in the original 1940 version. Everything about him was annoying, his voice and how he would randomly raise his voice at Bella to try and make her get even more upset.

That guy was a real *@#%head! For people who have seen both, does Boyer piss you off as much as this guy did?

reply

Yes, he was a very annoying character. Not at all likable. I don't know why she fell in love even though he was chasing her.

Anton Walbrook was brilliant in the 1940 version, however, and has a wonderful moment at the end when you can tell by his eyes that he has gone over the edge into total madness - Boyer doesn't have such a moment.

Oh he did very well at making me hate him. His voice grated on me, I can't imagine a story like that holding up in today's world. I think a lot of women would have left instead of believing everything there husbands were telling them.

If I knew I didn't take something, then I would not have backed down as easily as she did.

On another note, I thought Diana Wynward (the wife) looked a lot like a younger version of the woman who played Mrs. Danvers (Judith Anderson) in Rebecca. I thought it was her at first until I realized Rebecca and Gaslight were made in the same year lol.

Yes, that ending was great (The Rubies!!)

oh i wanted to slap charles boyer. I saw both versions but I'm fond of the '44 version. They're both good but it's been a long time since I saw the first one so I don't remember it too much.

Hey, Boyer is Boyer ... Very debonaire and very French ...

But I agree, when he gets arrogant and devious -- I wanna him!
