Gregory & The Maid

Was Gregory playing around with the maid, Nancy? I originally thought Gregory only flirted with Nancy to mess with Paula's head, even though Nancy seems interested in more.

But in the scene where Nancy hails a taxi to go to the music recital, she tells the constable Gregory and Paula's evening plans changed, which also changes her plans. She says, "I've had no word from him", referring to Gregory.

In the open, Nancy tells Gregory she is going out alone. In private, she makes it sound like Gregory has cancelled on her.

I mentioned in a previous post that I think an affair between Gregory and Nancy was probably coming – after Paula, and most likely Elizabeth, are sent away. I don't think it had already started at that point. I say that because I don't think Nancy would have continued 'wasting' her time ‘seeing’ the constable and others if she already had a wealthy man on her hook.

Nancy enjoyed going out to have fun but she could only do that after Paula had retired to her room. That's around the time Gregory would go out. If they were going out to an event, Nancy would probably have to wait for them to return before she could go out herself and perhaps by then it would be too late. Since this was a last minute outing (Gregory never imagined Paula would insist on going) Nancy wasn't told in advance she'd have to work late. As a result, she had already made plans for the evening; plans that were now ruined. Constable Williams was aware of her plans or the fact she went out regularly after her workday ended because he asks if she's hailing the cab for her outing.

Gregory's priority was finding the jewels. It's unlikely he would have delayed finding them by spending any of his search time with Nancy. Also, why risk finding them by being seen out in public with Nancy. That would have been a no-no. People would gossip (starting with Nancy) and once word got out it might raise questions about his marriage to Paula. Getting together with her in the house wouldn't have worked either as both Elizabeth and Paula were always there.
