That Husband!!

It's on right now. Never have I wanted to reach through the TV and strangle a husband since RoseMary's Baby! Great movie though. Incredible cast nd it's always a great to see a young Lansbury!!

Baby Jayonce rules my world!!!

reply

Yes, he is horrible. Aside from all the evil tricks he plays, every time I hear him speak, all I can think of is Pepé Le Pew.

reply

Isn't Pepe based on Charles? I read recently all of the Looney Tunes characters are parodies of other real life people.

reply

Or was it Maurice Chevalier?

reply

Which shows how well Charles Boyer played that role. There have been many films of "husbands" mistreating or torturing their wives, but the level of pure psychological torture that he inflicts upon Paula was especially poignant due to how effective it was.

reply

Oh, I know what you mean. I could barely watch the movie due to my hate and frustration with Gregory. The only thing that kept me with the story was the belief his comeuppance was on its way.

Wasn't Angela Landsbury a nasty piece of work?

reply

I'm used to Angela Landsbury as Mrs. Potts, Jessica Fletcher or in Bedknobs and Broomsticks. I loved her in this, but she was a fast little chit, wasn't she?

reply

Yes. A slight raise of an eyebrow, used to great effect by Charles Boyer .

I also read that Pepe La Pew (Pue?) was based on Charles Boyer. That one actor can establish himself as such a disgusting, hateful manipulator and as the sexiest man of the 30's and 40's says a lot for his acting ability as well as his innate sex appeal.

reply

Yes, Pepe Le Pew is based on Charles Boyer's Pepe Le Moko from the film, Algiers.

reply

Cool! Now I gotta see that one.

reply

And the real Charles Boyer was nothing like the character he plays in Gaslight. He was completely devoted and in love with his wife for the entire time that they were married and he actually committed suicide 2 days after her death. All of his co-stars described him as a gentleman and class act. He really was a tremendous actor to portray being a sadistic manipulator so well. So many "actors" just play themselves but Boyer had incredible range.

I thought Pepe Le Pew was based upon Maurice Chevalier?
