Oscar Nod for Lansbury?

After seeing the film for the first time, I was surprised that Angela Lansbury earned an Oscar nomination for this film. Not that here performance wasn't good - it's just that the role was rather small and the character didn't have any significant dramatic scenes.

I would have thought that Dame May Whitty would have scored a supporting bid instead.

What do others think?

I thought she was great but I also feel that Dame May Whitty should have also gotten a nomination.

I was surprised as well. She was good, but not nom-worthy IMO. Dame May Whitty was great and should have been nominated.

Angela was great! She was scary and devious, and really stood out. Does anyone else think she wanted to be Boyer's second wife (after getting rid of Ingrid?)?

Back then the studio system really pre-decided all nominations. It was probably this studio's "turn" and they opted to have the young, pretty starlet (Lansbury) get some acclaim rather than the older character actress.

Also, Anton was already married, so technically Paula was his second wife and Nancy the maid would've been #3.

I guess because the role was small that she got a supporting actress nod.

It's that man again!!
