they find out an american soldier is a descendent of the family when they see a birthmark on the back of his neck as he's playing with a little girl by chasing her with a gas mask on???

Strange question I know, but i saw a film where that happened years ago and it's been really bugging me to know what film it is ever since!

I hadn't seen the movie since I was a kid, nearly 40 years ago. Silly, simple, and entertaining. The little girl,Margret steals the show.

The extended subplot where the soldier is proving himself by blowing up a parachute-dropped bomb (after the young lady has actually been punching it with her bare hands!) is really bizarre, but i guess this worked as a charming wartime comedy.

I'm gonna look on Amazon for this movie, it's hard to find feel good movies nowadays :)
