top 250 movement

i dont think anyone fully understands the top 250 ranking thing and of course it doesnt matter much, but i dont understand how a film with a rating of 8.2 that was in the 250 can suddenly leave it when it has a higher score than a lot of other films

It's explained in the Top 250 list.

The formula for calculating the Top Rated 250 Titles gives a true Bayesian estimate:

weighted rating (WR) = (v ÷ (v+m)) × R + (m ÷ (v+m)) × C
where:
R = average for the movie (mean) = (Rating)
v = number of votes for the movie = (votes)
m = minimum votes required to be listed in the Top 250 (currently 3000)
C = the mean vote across the whole report (currently 6.9)

for the Top 250, only votes from regular voters are considered.

Except for a handful of films, the ' Top 250 ' is beyond a joke. Reason being, the age range of most of the people rating the films. Most of them aren't old enough to have a clue about what a fine piece of cinema is. If I had it my way, I wouldn't allow a film to be listed in the top 250 until at least 20 years after it's release date.

It's not a definitive list. But, let's say it was: how about not going your route but the route of the Top 1,000 voters?
