original book

I have a question as to whether the original book by Eric Knight would now be considered outdated or not. See, I am taking a Children's Lit course this semester, and we have to intoduce a book to the class that we have not been assigned, nor have we read before. I did read the book once, but it was a while ago, so I don't really remember the book. However, I absolutely love this movie. I know a movie remake was made fairly recently, but I don't know if the book would still be one of those enduring classics that many people would still enjoy reading, or if a person reading it would get the feeling that this book is outdated. I'd appreciate any help anyone can lend.
