Robert Mitchum as an unbilled extra!

Did anyone else notice Robert Mitchum as one of the soldiers in town? It seems like there were two girls going to the movies with three soldiers. His face is unmistakable but I couldn't imagine what he was doing in such a role and went scurrying to my computer to check out the complete cast. Sure enough, it was his second screen appearance. Everybody's got to start somewhere, and it sure didn't take him long to rise through the ranks to the top tier!

Yeah, wasn't that great? What impressed me is that he seemed to've already honed that laconic, laid back style that served him well throughout his entire career. Mitchum was quite scholarly, though he would never show it. I'd read years ago that he was a published poet at 14, incidentally the same age he was thrown onto a Georgia chain gang for vagrancy. Then of course there was the pot-smoking arrest in 1949. If you really want to get a feel on how outrageously talented this guy was, check out YouTube, What's My Line? Robert Mitchum.
